Black Oxen Gertrude Atherton 9781442913363 Books

Countess Mary Zattiany has discovered the scientific fountain of youth and returns to New York City to fall in love with a man who is technically half her age. Naturally all the other women, young and old, despise Mary. That's just the law of the jungle for you. But what it really boils down to is Countess Zattiany is a very shallow person. I don't care if she ran a hospital during World War I, she's full of nothing but herself.

Black Oxen Gertrude Atherton 9781442913363 Books Reviews

Countess Zattiany, who is 58, has a glandular operation (based on a silly popular theory of the day), the result being that she has the looks and personality of one who is 28. She falls in love with Lee Clavering, an ambitious young journalist. Even after telling him the truth about herself, he wants to marry her. But she marries an Austrian prince instead in order to pursue a diplomatic career. In the book at one point Atherton has the Countess describe the modern novel as "gloomy, pessimistic, excoriating, merciless, drab, sordid, and hideously realistic." Many of those terms describe this novel, too. Atherton was an old-fashioned novelist who thought she could be modern if she talked modern. But this book is very old-fashioned and a bit tiresome as well.
I just finished reading this book and loved it. I bought my first copy at an antique store in Dutch Flat in California's Gold Country, not knowing anything about it or it's author. The little store has a wall of old original publication books and I asked the proprietor if he happened to have any by Georgette Heyer - he didn't but asked if I had read any Gertrude Atherton and suggested this. I am very glad he did! It goes hand in hand with the redo (yet again) of The Great Gatsby on film and it was great fun to see the movie (great visuals, and Leo did a great job ) after having just finished Black Oxen. The other reviewer, having denigrated it for being "old fashioned" obviously didn't catch the fact that the book was written in 1922, and was the best selling book of 1923 and written by one of that time period's best selling authors, and is set in and is a commentary on that "Lost Generation" era and it's youth culture (history does repeat itself...) It does have a plot that is based around a fantasy idea, but the time, places and personalities are a fun commentary on the 1920's.
A very interesting period piece which is a worthwhile read for anyone who likes American literature. Highly recommended, And it's free!
I had to read this for a class. It is dense and hard to get through at times, but it is a very interesting concept and was quite unique for its time. It is a classic American tale, that touches on the often forgotten workings of our society's obsession with youth a beauty. It does also have interesting concepts and characters, that helps to move the story along.
